How To Attach Your Patches To Your Jacket – Alternatives to Needle and Thread

I was reading a thread over at ModernVespa.com today about “How To Attach Your Patches To Your Jacket?” Which reminded me of how lazy and/or fickle *I* am, when it came time to affix my club patches, as shown below…

Once again my laziness/obstinace prevails!  Plus, when I get kicked out of the club I won’t have holes in my jackets! ;)

Scooters on Mt. Hamilton

What’s this? Proof that I actually leave the house?!  This past weekend I went outside by choice- and enjoyed a hefty jaunt to Mt. Hamilton- wherever that is.

Only half the scooters taking a break at Mt. Hamilton Observatory

A gaggle of Scooters

Clocking in roughly 150 miles in one day, this run was full of adventures including the wild turkey and squirrel slalom, a couple bouts of rain, and even a few scowls from surly bikers now and then…

The Posse. Certainly not surly. [Photo credit: Leif Rasmussen

A day with the South Bay Scooter Posse isn’t your typical ice cream scooter run.   A run with these folks will acquaint you with some of the most adventurous roads and scenery the South Bay has to offer.   As we head into winter, thus marks the busy season for SBSP and fellow adventurers who make a point to take the road less traveled.  Pot holes and all…

Scooter Tag, August Edition

I don’t often get out of work before the sun goes down (sad trombone). But when I do, I always pass this South Bay landmark/art piece…

Randomly placed art piece...

WTF is it?  Anyone?

How to replace a (headlight adjustment) screw?

Reminding myself of why I excel in cerebral arts, I’ve managed to strip out the headlight adjustment screw on my Vespa (long story…). Question is, is this fixable? And by fixable I mean,
a) how to remove a stripped screw?
b) can it be replaced?
c) what size is it?

 Update after the jump…

left: the screw in its headlight encased glory

right: extreme closeup!  *ouch!*

UPDATE: Had to go all the way to Home Depot just to get the screw removed.   You mean there’s a ball at the end?! Should be fun trying to get this part… :(

no one said there's a ball at the end?!

Scooter Tag, July 2011, “Anything Joe’s”

Today I celebrated our nation’s independence by playing along with the “NATIONWIDE Scooter Tag” game over on ModernVespa.com. With the challenge of “anything “Joe’s”, I opted not to go for the easy win of Trader Joes.  I mean, they’ve got TJ’s up here like Idaho’s got Mavericks.   Instead I typed in “Joe’s” into Google and perused the random results.

I choose “Joe’s Cafe By The Bay”, because at approx. 25 miles away, it was far enough to be a nice ride, but not so far as to run out my week’s fuel allotment on a Monday.  Sadly, I couldn’t actually eat anything, as it was closed for the holiday.  :(

Eat at Joe's. Except on holidays.

In addition to grabbing the shot above, I got to take in some oceany goodness, watch the kite-boarders, and get kicked out of a Country Club parking lot. Not a bad day!

  • Topcase / Reflector Tape Mod…

Looking for something completely different this morning, I was reminded on Modern Vespa of the old reflectorized-tape-behind-the-piece-of-plastic-on-the-top-case trick…

To put it briefly- that reflector on your $400 OEM Vespa topcase?  TOTALLY NOT A REFLECTOR!!!   How lame is that?! Jonesing for an excuse to take the scoot out anyway, I went for a jaunt to my local M arine Supply Shop and grabbed some reflectorized tape in red…

Vespa topcase "reflector"? Not a reflector!

I removed the reflector by unscrewing it from the case…

    The screws to remove it...

    The screws to remove it...

Yep- just a cheap piece of plastic…. (really?!)

    White Plastic? Really?

3M reflective tape. Around six bucks after tax…

    $6 bucks...

I covered the OEM plastic with the tape, and trimmed to fit…

trimmed to fit (w/ screw holes)....

trimmed to fit (w/ screw holes)....

Replaced onto the topcase. Can ya see it?! (Yeah- me neither!)

    back onto the topcase

Noticeable to the naked eye but not w/ an iphone pic :(

I admit it’s noticeable to the naked eye but not (sadly) w/ an iPhone pic (might just be my crappy lighting as well!).  On the other hand, giving the same treatment to the reflectorized stripe on my Corazzo jacket?   totally noticeable!

    Before…

    before 3M tape

    Before 3M tape

    After…

Reflectorized stripe on my Corazzo jacket? totally noticeable! (We hope anyway!)

    Conclusion:

    • All the discussions say that the “SOLAS” tape is a better option, but my feeble shop didn’t have it, and it wasn’t worth spending my entire Easter Sunday tracking it out.
    • White tape on the topcase may be a better option, but no threads I visited clearly stated using white over red.  $6 wasted? I’ll get over it! (That’s like, a whole latte!) I may in the future, see if white does a better job on the topcase.  But, it’s still daylight out and have no way of testing it.  For now anyway.
    • The jacket on the other hand, is totally rockin’! Sure I’ll have to replace the tape someday after years of use, a hail storm, or the bi-annual washing, but I’ll get get over it.

(Note: all pics shot with the 3Gs iPhone, because it was either a new camera or a used Vespa!)
