I Wore a Red Shirt, and Played Soccer Too!

Boy this new life of mine is just chocked full of surprises! This weekend not only did I not pitch a hissy fit of wearing something red, I also played my first soccer game in about 25 years (but who’s counting?).

No More Mr. Nice Guy.

The “Big Disk” is the annual sports-ish competition between Stanford and Berkeley Residential Computing Staff. I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be restricted to just students, but Stanford was the only side putting Staffers onto the turf this year (they do call it “turf”, right?).   I’m not a sports writer so I’m not even going to try and summarize the chain of events other than the following:

a) Stanford beat Cal 4-2 in two 30-minute halfs.
b) I didn’t kill anyone or myself.
c) My bones are still aching a day and a half later.
d) I mostly had fun.

I say mostly because I can’t play soccer for shit, and I’ve never liked sprinting *or* team sports (which is why I can’t play soccer for shit!).  My purpose for going out there wasn’t to win anything or impress anyone, but to meet even more of my new 100+ staff and participate in some team building. In that regard, I think the day was a success. At least in the meeting people part.

One of my new colleagues busted out the “big glass” and rustled up some cool photos of the event. He has posted it on his Facebook page, available at the following link:  Big Disk 2010 . Who knows what might happen next in this new adventure!!  (please don’t say karaoke. please don’t say karaoke!)

By the way, did I mention that STANFORD BEAT CAL!! (yeah, apparently that’s some kind of big deal around here. I’m pretending I care. :) )

Stanford ResComp Takes “Big Disk 2010″, 4-2 vs Cal

Stanford and Berkeley Residential Comp staff went head to head on April 18th on Wilbur Field in the Big Disk 2010 Competition. This year featured a soccer game with a full field of people who didn’t really know what they were doing. But hey- geeks are cool like that!

After hashing out the rules, both sides put forth a great effort, with Stanford beating Cal 4-2 in two 30-minute sets.

This was my first attempt at playing soccer since the early 80s!  Fortunately since High School and now, I actually learned how to run round the block a few times, which apparently is an important skill in what the everyone but America calls “Football”.

I had a great time hanging out and socializing with my  new staff, and more more importantly doing something I haven’t done before. (no, High school PE doesn’t count!)

I left the event with aching old-man bones and blisters in the strangest places. But I feel I also left with a better understanding of the team spirit instilled in every Stanford student as well as earning my stripes as the new guy.  I’ll post pics whenever they appear on the internet.  Until then, pass the Motrin® please, and the firings continue!

WARRIOR DASH 2010 RECAP (SoCal)

Based on the tone of the reviews beginning to surface, more than a few people expected an uber-challenge from the 2010 Warrior Dash in SoCal. I was one of them. I guess that the most popular coupon code available online was “crossfit” may have been misleading. So, yeah- “Warrior Dash” is not going to be an Olympic event anytime soon. Get over it bro and drink a beer.

Overall, Warrior Dash was hella fun for a lot of people. The ones who came for the fun and not the challenge walked away happy.  Over 5000 participants completed the race on the Saturday event, with the top prize going to a 23 y/o who completed the event in just over 20 minutes! (mental note: do not try and race against this guy!) As you’ll read in other recaps, the obstacles weren’t as challenging as they appear on the website, which disappointed many folks out there. This actually worked out given the fairly hot day after two weeks of SoCal cold and rain, but also illustrates the the event is just that- an event!

They could have billed it as “fun run” and maybe not so many people would have their panties in a bunch. I had a great time hanging out, meeting new people, and checking out the cool (and not so cool) costumes people chose to wear. Like most events these days, the price of concessions- beer, food, water, clothing, etc. were outrageous! But not more than say Ozzfest, MarleyFest, or a baseball game. I heard that an earlier group went off course (waay off course!) due to some fallen tape and no one on the field pointing the way. I’d be kinda pissed too if that were my group.

If the excellent weather hadn’t caught people off-guard I suspect there would have been many more scantily clad hotties. Something to keep in mind for next time-  I mean, if you’re into that sort of thing. I apparently managed to put together a pretty  impressive Zulu Warrior costume, since I had over 100 people want a picture with me. That was weird. Hopefully they will go viral soon and I will have to get an agent to field my bookings (yeah right). Despite the surprise lack of rain and mediocre obstacles, I did not reach my goal of winning a trophy this time out. I blame myself for falling off my training for the week prior (I have a great excuse though!). I managed to come in 11th place in my age group and 176th overall (out of 5000+? not too shabby). My time was a depressing 25:59 (over 5 minutes behind third place), which I guess is still pretty good for a guy who logs 80% of his mileage on a treadmill. :)

The “one free beer” was a cool treat and loss leader but was a convoluted mess trying to cash it in. At $8 a beer, there were many many sloshed warriors and warriorettes by the end of the day so they surely made a cool profit. If I didn’t have a pressing engagement I’m sure I could have secured my way into an after party or two!

Would I do it again? For under $50 and less than an hour drive? Sure. Alas, I just moved this past weekend, and the next closest one to me is $65 “early bird price” *and* a 2-1/2 hr drive.

I look forward to next year!  Will I see you there?

Stanford Acquires Smith in Aggressive Negotiations

I can hardly believe it myself that after 11 years at my current place of employment, I have accepted a new position at Stanford University! Ironically my new job is basically the same work I’ve been doing for 11 years, but a lot more of it- for a lot more money.

My new company carries brand recognition beyond comparison. I will oversee literally 10 times the number of employees, providing services for twice the number of client/customers as I do currently. Moving on to this new career is the ultimate manifestation of the “bittersweet moment”: After 11 years you either love or hate your job, right? Despite how much I bitch about it, I love my job.  I love the place, the people, the job description, the commute, etc. The money? Well… not so much.

But overall, leaving a job I can do in my sleep, and that is almost impossible to get fired from, surrounded by people whom I respect and admire, is not about the money. Okay, yeah- it’s about the money. But not JUST about the money. It’s about the opportunity, challenge, adventure, validation… you know- all that hippy crap everyone says they care about when really they care about the money more than anything. It’s also a lot about knowing I’ll never get a chance to “move up the ladder” like this ever again.  And let’s face it- I ain’t getting any younger!

I love where I live- my current house, neighborhood, and roommate comprise the best living conditions I’ve ever experienced outside of having parents take care of me. I’m not looking forward to giving it up.

Yes, I certainly have to uproot myself and move to literally unfamiliar territory.  The housing costs at my new job are over 300% higher on average, which means the chances of me living in a dumpy ghetto apartment again are pretty high! I’ll try to avoid it as best I can.

I leave behind many friends, family, and colleagues that will be missed greatly. I have a legacy of former and current employees that have since become good friends. Where I’m going I don’t know anyone! Talk about a major life upheaval?!

Still, I know this is the best thing for me- a chance to grow, learn new things, and influence a whole new world of people… either that or I’ll fall on face miserably, get fired, and join the ranks of destined-for-failure.

I start in less than a week on April 12th. I already have my first week of duties and meetings planned and I don’t know how long it will be before I can start going to the gym again. Funny how of all things, this irks me, huh?!

Viva Le Stanford!!

I found a place!

As of 11am today, I have found a place near my new job!

I’ll admit I was starting to freak out a bit there.  I combed the Craigslist ads for about three days to come up with 3-4 potential leads on a temporary housing solution*. Then I drove the 450 mile trek to check them out and get an overall lay of the land.  Of the four people on my list advertising a room available, I couldn’t get a hold of two of them.

I set up a couple walk-throughs via Craigslist that just didn’t work out:

Crazy Cat Lady is out. For one, cats, ew!  Two: the apartment is the smallest two-bedroom apartment I’ve ever seen in my life.  I could feel the severe lack of privacy in the air!  Nice person though.

The second place I checked out (aka “tree-huggin’ hippy commune”)  was okay but the room isn’t available until 3 days after my first day.  They wanted at least a two-month commitment and I hate hippies. Lol.  Kidding.  More like im too old to be sharing a house w 3 other vegans. People, I mean :)

I drove back home down but not out, and without an “inked” place to stay.  I read and replied to countless ads for three more days with no replies.  All week when people would ask if I found a place and I say no and they freak out on my behalf, I’ve been saying “i have a friend who is never wrong, who said that universe wouldn’t do that to [me]“. (true story!)

It was not until yesterday that I got any reply, and finally this morning we were able to talk for a few minutes and I convinced her I’m an okay guy.  So at least I have a place to stay for 6 weeks.  Hopefully I’m not jinxing it.  I have only seen bad pictures of the inside and Google Street View of the outside.  I still need to find a permanent solution, and soon!

*(My current roommate said I could leave my stuff in the house as long as I wanna pay rent! Which is ironically, reassuring in a demented and sad way.)

Little Fish, Big Pond (new segment)

Announcing a new segment I will be working on called “Little Fish…”- A series of thoughts and one liners aimed to chronicle my transition from being a big fish in a little pond, to a little fish in a big pond. A really big pond. More news on that in the upcoming hours…
